It is the official path for all specialists, consultants and health professionals entering into and working within private practice. It is the only secure way to store and maintain your full private practice profile and documentation online. If you are currently in private practice and are recognised by the private medical insurers, you can still register on The PPR. You will be able to store your capabilities and practise rights securely online and update them at any time. Certain insurers require you to update your information via The PPR only.
The PPR is available for GMC registered independent practitioners and other healthcare professionals such as Physiotherapists, Osteopaths and Chiropractors. Once you have registered on The PPR, you are the owner and controller of the data that is entered; you will be responsible for updating information as necessary.
The PPR was first released in 2016 to support the application and maintenance of PMI recognition. Healthcode has now launched The PPR for private hospitals to help them manage their consultant population.
Healthcode is a leading provider of IT services for the private healthcare sector focusing on industry solutions. Healthcode’s expertise and industry knowledge helps independent specialists, private hospitals and insurers improve their operational efficiencies.
Its solutions include the clearing of medical invoices, electronic billing, practice management systems, insurer member database hosting, secure messaging and clinical coding tools.
Established in 2000 as the official clearing company for medical bills in the UK, Healthcode clears circa 20k invoices daily, to the value of £3bn worth of medical invoices annually for hospitals and independent practitioners.
The introduction of hospitals to The PPR is to help them meet their due diligence requirements for regulators. Hospitals will begin to join The PPR in order to access information on their specialists. Hospitals will be able to view specialist profiles of those that work at their hospitals. The information that hospitals have access to will be dependent on their subscription level. The minimum information a hospital can view on your profile:
- Practice hours
- Type of patients you treat at the hospital
- Type of care the you provide
- Start and end dates of practise at the hospital

The PPR will enable hospitals to be aware of any overdue appraisals and indemnity, GMC warnings and alerts, along with changes to fitness to practise that the hospital needs to be aware of. These prompts will assist Hospitals on having the most up to date information on their specialists for better long-term patient safety and demonstrates how seriously the sector/hospital takes patient safety.
The following hospitals agreed to take part in the Hospital PPR pilot:
- Chelsea & Westminster
- Circle Health
- One Healthcare
- Royal Free London
The pilot commenced on 29th October 2018. The roll out to all private hospitals has commenced.
Hospitals can use the basic service or subscribe to an enhanced service. The basic service of The PPR for hospitals provides basic registration information of:
- Specialists that have indicated they practise from that hospital
- Specialists previously mapped on the billing site and submitted as a Controlling Specialist on an invoice submitted by a Hospital Provider.
The standard service provides the same functionality to hospitals as basic and enables the hospital provider to view the specialist’s full profile. The profile includes the following information:
- Personal profile
- NHS and private practice information
- Fitness to practise information
- Specialties and qualifications
- Medical secretary details
- Bank details
- Medical indemnity
- Insurer recognition details
- GMC status, specialty, qualification, registration and fitness to practise information.
Healthcode will be working with the hospital PPR user group to further enhance The PPR, these may include:
- Procedure credentialing
- Practising privileges
- Revalidation facilities
Hospitals can only update the following information if incorrect:
- Practice hours
- Type of patients the consultant treats at the hospital
- Type of care the consultant provides
- Start and end dates of practise at the hospital
All other information is read-only.
If a hospital updates any of the above information, the specialist is notified by email that a change has been made. The PPR directly addresses the challenge of governance and demonstrates how seriously the sector takes patient safety. It gives hospitals greater confidence to talk openly about the high-quality patient care delivered on a daily basis.

Hospitals can only access your information via The PPR system (developed by Healthcode). All the data held by Healthcode is stored within a private dedicated infrastructure which is physically located in a secure UK data centre, rather than held in a cloud in an unknown location. Our dedicated Tier 3 infrastructure is of enterprise quality designed to contain no single point of failure. All systems are secured in accordance with internet banking conventions and only accessible via encrypted network connections. Access to The PPR is protected and secured by Transport Layer Sockets (TLS), user credentials and role-based control.
A back-up copy of the data is taken on a daily basis and securely stored in a separate UK hosted disaster recovery facility.
As a specialist on The PPR, you will already receive email notifications for profile updates or when an insurer you have applied for recognition or have a relationship with updates your insurer recognition status. These notifications will expand to include notifications to inform you of actions hospitals may have taken. These notifications will be via email, and may be for a number of reasons as follows:
- A hospital that you work at has changed information (start and end dates of practise at the hospital, type of care a specialist provides, type of patients treated at the hospital, practise hours) on your PPR Profile; as mentioned in Question 6.
- Hospitals you work at will be notified if your medical indemnity insurance has expired, appraisal is overdue and/or if any GMC warnings exist
If a specialist believes any updates made to their profile by a hospital are incorrect, then the specialist should update their profile and contact the hospital.
No, you don’t need to do anything, simply be aware of the changes coming through. We will keep you up to date with any milestones which you need to be aware of. It is in the specialist’s best interest to ensure their data is accurate and kept up to date via the secure portal in order to support compliance and transparency across the sector. It is important for specialists to ensure organisations they have a relationship with have the most up-to-date information to maintain their insurer recognition status and hospital practising privileges.
Ensuring the specialist profile is up to date and accurate is the responsibility of the specialist. All registered specialists have access to the secure portal. It is in their best interest to ensure their information accurate as this supports compliance and transparency across the sector. It is important for specialists to ensure organisations they have a relationship with have the most up-to-date information to maintain their insurer recognition status and hospital practising privileges.

Post roll out of hospital PPR, all private hospitals will be on The PPR.
PHIN is the independent, government-mandated source of information about private healthcare, working to empower patients to make better-informed choices of care provider. PHIN enables patients to make informed choices. The PPR can only be viewed by industry stakeholders such as specialists, insurers and hospitals. The development of The PPR is to streamline cumbersome, manual processes, to improve operational efficiency and to facilitate and support data transparency and accuracy amongst key stakeholders.
