The PPR profile is comprised of data entered by the practitioner, who is the controller and therefore remains in charge of what is available. This profile can only be viewed by organisations with whom the practitioner has a relationship with; insurers who have recognised them and hospitals where they hold practising privileges. The information contained in The PPR is required by these organisations in order to grant and maintain recognition and practising privileges and, rather than have to copy and send the same documents potentially to many organisations on an individual basis, The PPR allows everyone access to a single source of data. It is therefore important that the profile is completed as fully as possible and that the practitioner ensures the information is kept up to date.
However, the data required by insurers and hospitals will differ and visibility is therefore controlled on a need-to-know basis, with the divergences being most obvious in data required to grant practising privileges.
The table below sets out insurer and hospital profile data visibility at a high level. A more detailed look at which individual data elements are viewed by these organisations can be found by visiting the pages on each of the data standards.
