Private practice is paid work undertaken as a professional that is not part of the NHS. Many practitioners will practise medicine in a private setting in addition to working in the NHS, although some practitioners may have retired from the NHS (or have never worked in that sector) and only work in the private sector. Practitioners will generally be self-employed, although there are a few hospital facilities that now employ clinical staff. There are various treatment sites that a practitioner can use to practise medicine in the private sector: hospitals, clinics and consulting rooms, which may be located anywhere including their own home. In order for patients to be funded by private medical insurance companies, the treatment sites will need to be recognised by them.
