Fitness to Practise

Being fit to practise medicine means that the practitioner is completent in what they do and can justify the trust that is placed on them as a respeced member of society.  As well as achieving and maintaining their medical skills and knowledge, the practitioner must also be able to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients and ensure that they act responsibly and appropriately at all times, especially if they or a colleague falls ill and their performance suffers.

  • whether the practitioner has ever had an investigation or proceedings undertaken by the police or any professional body anywhere in the world
  • confirmation of a valid licence to practise
  • details of any additional medical/clinical training undertaken (not the primary medical qualification, which is listed in the section Specialties & Qualifications)
  • details of the practitioner's certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service; for any practitioner this should be an enhanced check with additional adults and children barred list information as required
